Malarkey The Alaskan / Hurricane Review
A three tab shingle with a little something extra: A very unique feature for a 3-tab shingles makes us think Malarkey unlike some other manufacturers three tabs are here to stay. we will be reviewing the
Alaskan and Hurricane for a long time to come. SBS is essentially a rubber modified asphalt that give shingles more durability as proven in impact ratings. With Class 4 impact ratings these shingles withstood a 2 hour simulation of hail hitting them at 90 miles per hour with no damage to speak of. SBS is a newer technology and we like seeing a manufacturer with the guts to put it in a traditional looking shingle. They also upped the bar for three tabs by applying a standard 100 mph coverage for these product line. Those 3m Colorfast roofing granules are suppose to keep those shingles looking newer longer as well.
Malarkey The Alaskan and Hurricane Pricing
Offering probably the best bang for the buck in a three tab shingle in our opinion – there is a lot of features built into a three tab and the only one we would truly consider if you just really had to have a three tab shingle. Think right around the $90-$100 per 100 square ft range.
Manufacturer | Shingle Brand | Features | Our Rating 5 Nails Max |
Malarkey | The Alaskan | Adding SBS in a traditional design really ups the bar for a standard 3 tab. | ![]() ![]() ![]() |

These are a good three tab but with all the deals you can get with Architecturals etc you might as well but the Landmarks or Oakridge for same price point really.
Well I got these from the recommendation on this site as Best Value shingle or something. We had to special order them but Mid State roofing actually said they were the toughest one of these shingles they’d seen when installing them. Look very flat to me, not as fancy looking as the Legacy or Timberlines etc…
