For a shingle to outlast you…. Timberline Ultra HD
This is the flagship shingle for GAF. They took the every popular standard Timberline shingle and made it as tough as possible while also adding some of the best colored granule makeups on the market today. Applied properly these shingle will be a lifetime investment on your home which is what helps justify the somewhat higher pricing. Multiple layered asphalt shingle with many proprietary technologies integrated.
If you use a GAF Master Elite Certified roofer you can get the Golden Pledge warranty with the Timberline HD.
It comes with a 25 year Installation Warranty and a 50 year limited lifetime warranty (usually 50 years), backed by GAF!!!, so even if they installed it wrong GAF will pay, at no dollar limit, to repair or replace the roof.
If you still want the ULTRA, which is like 33% thicker, You can get it with the same warranty but why would you spend that much more for product and still get the same warranty??
If you are in the HAIL belt, and you want to spend more money for a thicker shingle, then get the impact rated shingle, which is made to resist damage from hail. IT IS NOT HAIL PROOF. . . but neither are the regular HD or Ultra HD.
As far as Owens Corning, they needed a gimmick since Lowes and Home Depot (after 30 years) kicked them out and now stock GAF in store.
Malarkey is a great shingle. Better made, in my opinion, than the GAF. . . but GAF’s Golden Pledge Warranty is infinitely better.
An ok shingle with a great installation will work to the best of its ability.
A great shingle installed improperly will never work to its expectation.
A great contractor program coupled with a great warranty is the equalizer.
This is the original Elk 40 Sierra. I have it on my home. Best looking roof in my neighborhood. It was put on in 2004 and still looks like new. The thick, 280 pound per sq roof is probably the best roof ive ever had installed. While the neighbors all have had their roofs, fade, mine looks great. The sablewood, (Charcoal) is a beautiful roof. If it ever dies, I’ll install the ultra, again.
Stunning shingle!!
Wanting to know the weight of GAF Timberline Ultra HD shingle per square, and how many bundles per square? Thank you.
As a GAF customer and professional roofer, i do like the Timberline Ultra HD shingle…….However, it does not deserve to be in the top 5 shingles, and its not “really” the manufactures fault. See, the problem with this shingle is that there is a nailing area which the roofers should be fastening in. However when we pull up to a roof which has missing shingles due to high wind, its usually an installation issue of the roofers missing the nailing area as it is poorly defined, and it is a continuing problem. Salesmen will always tell you that this is not an issue because they are careful, but this is not the truth. until this is remedied I don’t believe they should be top 5. Malarkey Legacy has an extra wide nailing strip that is clearly marked, Owens Corning Trudefinition Duration has a woven fabric strip that acts as an additional security layer and clearly marks where the nails should be fastened.
I live in Wisconsin and am trying to decide on the brand of asphalt shingle to install. One installer has bid the job with GAF Timberline HD. There is a $2660 upcharge to put on Timberline ULTRA HD. The roof may be replaced this November (earlier not possible due to contractor’s calendar being full til then) or next spring. I’m wondering if the shingles will lay flat after installation if done this Nov and whether the ULTRA warrants the additional charge. Another contractor wants to use Malarkey shingles and job would be done in the spring. Would appreciate your thoughts.
Hi Rose,
I am not the owner of the site, but I can tell you that I am having my roof in Minnesota replaced with Ultra HD next week and they mentioned the Ultra HD works better in a colder install compared to thinner shingles. I would do the Ultra HD just because it’s such a heavier duty shingle in terms of thickness and weight than the standard timberline. If you have to wait until November, I doubt it will be over 40 degrees so you may be better off waiting until spring. For my install the weather should have highs in the mid 50’s so it should be OK.
