Wide Use Dimensional Shingle: Architectural or dimensional shingles such as these have quickly become the most popular asphalt based shingle on the market. Landmark shingles or Certainteed’s baseline dimensional shingle. Offering a “Lifetime” warranty in all iterations of the landmark shingle. See below for our ratings and the distinctions on different types of the product. Thank you for reading this expert Certainteed Landmark Review. Price of Landmark Shingles
These are a pretty good bang for the buck and nationwide average around $85/ -$95 square.

Certainteed | Landmark | Fiberglass base mat, laminated shingle with dimensional look. Entry level Landmark. This used to be their 30 yr. shingle.
Certainteed | Landmark Pro | Nearly identical to Landmark with a thicker layer os asphalt creating a heavier shingle. This used to be their 40 Year shingle.
Certainteed | Landmark Premium | More limited in colors but even heavier yet than previous 2 at 300lbs per square. This used to be there 50 Year shingle.
Certainteed | Solaris | 250lbs per square all ENERGY STAR rated roofing given because of the reflective colors. Only 4 Color options all very light as of 2012

Certainteed | Landmark IR | Meant to withstand impacts such as hail and falling debris this is a slightly tougher iteration of standard Landmark with a more limited color range.
Certainteed | Landmark TL | Super tough patented 3 layer laminate construction with a HUGE color range. VERY thick and heavy shingle for permanent application. |
The newer CertainTeed Landmark shingles are of poor quality. We had a new roof installed in 2016 and already have most of the shingles flying in light wind because the adhesive strips are defective which doesn’t allow the shingles to adhere to each other. CertainTeed does not give a flip. They will give you the run around asking for shingle samples and delaying as long as possible until you either give up or your warranty expires. Check all of the reviews and you’ll see that there have been numerous complaints of poor shingle adhesion and granular shedding. If you get more than 10 years on a 30 year CertainTeed Landmark roof, then you are one of the lucky ones. Someone needs to sue the pants off this company until they learn to have some integrity and stand behind their product.

I wrote this review on Friday afternoon Feb. 28th but it was not immediately posted. This is a real response to the poor quality of CertainTeed shingles. I’ve noticed my posts on other sites either never appeared or were removed shortly after posting. CertainTeed or one of their representatives most likely are deleting them to hide their poor reviews.
Some reviews are held for approval and will not be immediately posted. We don’t censor anything other that DUPLICATE reviews of the same shingles From the SAME IP address. IE we only allow one review per shingle per IP address. In general Anonymous reviews with suspect duplicate IP address’s are held. I bought a house in 2009 that’s 118 years old currently. As being a first time home owner, I’m now having to replace my roof due to age. I have had 4 big roofing contractors out to give me an estimate and all of them sell nothing but Certainteed. I have actually ran from these contractors because of those shingles they’re selling. This has nothing to do with the contractors that are highly recommended. My issue with Certainteed is this. To get a warranty on those shingles I must have the ridgevent installed on my roof for proper ventilation. My house isn’t designed for that ridgevent and it wouldn’t do a bit of good to tear up my roof peak cause I would still have an issue with ventilation for those type of shingles due to no soffits on my box gutters and no vents on the sides of my home. A company that requires to have something like a ridgevent installed to create even more ventilation tells me that something isn’t quite right with what they’re selling. I currently have 4 vents on my roof that provides adequate ventilation. So, why on Earth would I want something like a ridgevent installed if I have the proper ventilation to begin with? Perhaps the shingles being sold is crap and the company knows it. I don’t care what any roofer says about how good these shingles are. As a homeowner, we to have to take responsibility in not only who works on our roofs, but also making sure what’s going on that roof. Nobody wants to spend $20k on a roof and 10-15 years down the road have it fail and kick out $20k plus to do it again. After reading the reviews from those who have experienced issues, has definitely confirmed my suspicions. Interesting how I haven’t heard one roofer say they have Certainteed installed on their own homes. Installing them and actually owning them are two completely different stories. I’m sticking with my gut instincts, running from all these big companies and going with a smaller company accredited through BBB who actually has some pride in they’re work. A good roofing company isn’t gonna continue installing crappy products because it looks bad on them as well. And that’s just common sense period!
HI Shirley,
You may have been misinformed. Certainteed does not require ridge-vent in order to warranty their shingles. They do require “adequate” ventilation – which can be achieved in many ways but essentially requires the equivalent of a balanced soffit / ridge vent system. You can do this in a variety of ways – with mechanical fans – under shingle input venting etc etc… If you expressed your concerns and none of those companies gave you different options than yes they do have an issue to address. FYI – ALL the major shingle manufacturers have a similar requirement. If you really don’t want to meet this requirement OR can’t because of architectural issues – veer away from asphalt shingles in general. They are more sensitive than shingles of the past. Go with a Metal shingle, slate, tile roof, etc etc…
I don’t care so much for the shingles of any kind. Today’s standards far exceed the old days. The key to success is a five star builder.I found one….
Licensed Contractor and Certified Home Inspector in Michigan,
I can say I use Certain Teed Landmark Shingles almost exclusively. Although we only do about 10-12 roofs a year. They have have been great to install, customers love them and they seem to be holding up well on previous installations. (I.E….No Call Backs for shingle failure) I have to agree with most every contractor on this thread that it boils down the installers knowledge/ care during installation and proper ventilation (which causes the granule loss). This will likely occur with every shingle manufacturer.
Todd, Which line from CertainTeed have you used? the Landmark , Landmark PRO, or the Landmark TL?
Which Landmark do you recommend?

I am a Roofing Contractor 30 years in business in Dallas. I also have 2 BBA’s. ALL SHINGLE WARRANTIES are worthless.!! We are honest with our customers. We tell people that IN DALLAS, due to many light hailstorms per year and HIGH HEAT all summer.; the so-called 30 year shingles last about 17-18 years barring a hailstorm. 3 tabs last about 16. NOW all the manufacturers give a so called Limited Lifetime Warranty.. Even more worthless, as I tell my customers. Certainteed makes good shingles. All you people are misinformed expecting them to last 30 years. Actually they do last much longer in Northeast are of the country and in Colder climates. The heat really breaks them down. IF you want a better shingle spend the extra money and buy IR’s – Impact resistant. They are NOT HAILPROOF!!!! nothing is hailproof. but they are heavier and thicker and last longer. GAF Timberline Ultras. TAMKO 50s, Certainteed IR’s or really splurge and get superheavys Certainteed Presidential Shakes. Those will last 30 years in Dallas even unless you have like baseball hail. And they look great.
As you can imagine the Manufacturers reps don’t like to see me coming LOL. I love to tease them about their worthless warranties .

So we bought a new house in 2014 that was built in 2008. It has a certainteed landmark 30 yr roof on it,that is failing. My contractor likes certainteed and wants me to go with certainteed pro,but I am very worried. I definitely understand how important it is for a quality install and venting, all the way down to quality nails. I wonder if it is a good idea to ice and water shield the hole roof under shingles? I know it’s a great idea in valleys but I want a bulletproof roof. We are also thinking about a metal roof, but don’t really like the look of metal roof. I’m really big on doing right the first time even if it cost more. Any helpful feedback would be greatly appreciated. I just don’t want anymore problems in our beautiful home.
Don’t buy certainty roofing products I’m a retired contractor
There’s product is junk and they do not stand behind it trust me roofing companies or like chiropractors looking for repeat business
Great feed back everyone! Can not stress enough the importance of ventilation, and the company you hire is imperative to the outcome of every roof project. I am a Christian based contractor and I only use Northgate landmark shingles. This is a class 4 impact resistant product and is great for home insurance cost reduction. A quality contractor will be able to warranty this roof under the shingle master program and give the home owner a great piece of mind.
Anyone with mold problems? My roof is a Certainteed Landmark shingle put on in 2010 and there visible mold growing on the edges of the shingle, some as thick as my pinky finger. Filed a claim but was told it is not “blue algae” and is not covered. My roofer says that he has never seen the mold this bad this quickly. The roof is ventilated well. Looking for options before I pay to have it cleaned off.
Any old honest roofer will tell you that they don’t put much asphalt in shingles any more. When i first started installing shingles in the early eighties you came home and had black tar marks on you. You could smell the ashphalt in the shingles. Winter roofing was not an issue back then, as the asphalt shingles were still plyable in the winter. Back then a 25 year three tab 210 lb per square roof would last 27 years. Now a days you come home clean ! All shingles are nothing but filler. They don’t even call them asphalt shingles any more.back in the eighties oil was $20-25 barrel, shingles were $10 bucks a bundle. Today oil is at least $50 barrel, shingles are $20 a bundle. So it really doesn’t matter what shingle you put on, it cannot last . It’s all filler and no oil. High temp under lay and a good steel roof is your only option !.
Agreed.
Just purchased 30-year certain teed shingles and scared to put them on. Can I returned them?
I’ve been in the roofing business 20 years and CertainTeed shingles are by far some of the best shingles that I’ve ever dealt with but it is imperative that the roof is adequately ventilated and it is the homeowners job and the contractors job to educate and inform themselves and each other and deal with certified master elite contractor don’t deal with a guy with a truck and a trailer and then you’ll get what you want instead of what you get and that’s a headache
Geez I’m confused. I am in need of a new roof and live in southwest Florida. Moved here last year and my house is 17 years old.
I have 3 proposals that vary as much as $5,000. Did find a reputable company that’s been in business since 1950 and doesn’t even require a deposit. I’m inclined to hire them based on their reputation and workmanship reviews. BUT he advised they install Certainteed Landmark series very successfully, Owens Corning Oakridge shingle second choice and Tamko Heritage Premium most often. I advised I read awful reviews about Tamko and would not consider that shingle.
On this site I’m now concerned about the certainteed landmark shingle.
I need to make a choice so do you have an opinion between Owens Corning Oakridge and the Certainteed Landmark product? I’m excluding Tamko as reviews on many sites for numerous are more negative than positive.
We had landmark 30 shingles installed by a professional roofer about 10 years ago. The granules on the southern slope of the roof have almost all ended up in the rain gutters. We now have some white patches showing through. Sounds like my experience is not unique.
I purchased a home which had Certainteed shingles. The roof is less than 10 years old and there are leaks.
They will not honor the 30/10 year warranty by the previous owner. The warranty will only stand for two years after the property transfers.
What a pathetic way to treat people, and not stand by your products.
Don’t waste your money. Beware of the expense of the warranty.
COMPLETE GARBAGE, DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!
I am a Real Estate Broker and we are seeing widespread failures of these shingles. CT is refusing to warranty them even though the 30 year products have failed in less than 10 years. This company has so many lawsuits against them for roofing and siding products that you can’t even tell which is which. They knowingly sold defective products and continue to do so. You’ll never know if you have the defective shingles until it’s too late, and then uncertainteed will find a loophole in the warranty and refuse to even take your calls.
RUN AWAY FROM THESE THIEVES and go buy a quality product, from a company that stands behind their products. If your roofer recommends them, find a new roofer.
Hi Mike,
We have heard this before, but to be non-bias there are similar story’s about many different shingle manufacturer’s. Certainteed did have a large problem with organic shingles in the past. There ARE LOTS OF LOOPHOLES in every manufacturers shingle warranty. A homeowners best bet if they are hiring out the installation is to use the highest certified installer business from that company. Like a 5 star Certainteed installer OR Platinum Owens Corning. Then make sure the warranty is registered through those exclusive programs. Those warranty’s eliminate almost all of the loopholes, covering the quality of the installation, labor everything basically. Check that the business has been around a long time and the reputation. From experience with nearly every manufacturer their is the most common reason for failures is not following the manufacturer’s specification regarding proper Ventilation of the roof. This goes a lot deeper than, oh yeah there is ridgevent etc.. The proper ratio on input venting to output is essential. With architectural homes and more varied roof-lines this is sometimes very difficult to achieve! In any event it does feel horrible when a roof surface fails and there is no one to take the blame. When replacing your roof take A LOT of time upfront to make sure you are covered down the road. Almost always this means paying MUCH MORE than the cheapest quote, although it may seem very similar…

Everything you said is so true…homeowners must realize that you can have the best shingle on the market, but if it is installed improperly or not vented properly, it will not last. I have been in the roofing industry for over 20 years and I hear it all the time. I try to take the time and explain to the home owner what I need to do to make their roof last 30 plus years, hoping that they will see the value of having their roof put on right instead of having their roof put on cheap. As was said before, Certainteed did have some problems years ago with their shingles, but they have a great shingle now with a great warranty, just like GAF and Owens Corning. Homeowners must get that extended warranty through a certified installer, then there is no worries or hoops to jump through is something fails on the roof. Phrase of the week….Don’t go cheap….
I live in a side by side I have heard this venting issue before my neighbours bought in to that BS and payed for additional venting . 15 years latter my side looks terrible and his is leaking . what difference did the venting make ? 25 YEAR SHIGLES
and when I bought the roof I asked the sales person why I needed additional venting the shingles I had on the roof had been there from 1972 to 2001 with the venting that was their . install shingles like these .
this venting issue is just a way for contractors to make money and shingle company to get out of paying warranty
All the shingle company seem much the same . many people in my neighbourhood have gone to metal roofing to get a product that will work . even though it cost more there are not all these lawsuits against them all the consumer wants is a product that dose what it says NOT A WARRANTY AND A LAW SUIT
I thought the same type of thing for a while. The real change is in the shingles themselves Don. Your original shingles from the 70’s were much thicker and heavier and therefore less prone to ventilation needs. Newer shingles are lighter and more sensitive…
I paid extra for a Sure Start Plus 5 Star Warranty and this company still didn’t honor it. They only wanted to glue down loose shingles and wipe their hands free of their defective product. They will do only what’s necessary to get rid of a complaint and have no concern for the customer that has paid thousands for their roof.
Hi Broker Mike,
I am building a new home and my contractor uses Certianteed roofing products.
Can you please give me a call 360-623-5242
Thank you,

Your a idiot stick to real estate they shit on the competitors
Hey Chris-
When you go to call people an idiot, be sure to be grammatically correct. “Your” indicates ownership as in, “Your [Chris’s] grammar sucks.” You want to say, “You’re an idiot”, as in a contraction for “You are an idiot”. (Honestly though, that is so third grade.) Since you seems to call people idiots often, this tip may be particularly useful for you.
Or better yet, let people give their experience on posts like this so we have a reliable source of information as consumers about really expensive products. Just a thought.
Hey Anonymous,
You might want to study your grammar. You is always plural, grammatically speaking. Therefore, you should have used “seem”, instead of “seems”. Maybe, you should stick to reliable information, instead of English lessons.
Not helpful.
I never had a problem
these shingles are the best I known
i been a roofer for 23 years
I am considering using the Certainteed Landmark IR shingle for my replacement roof as I like the color option they offer in their IR line.. The bad reviews are disturbing & I will inquire with the supplier/dist. to see what they say. I am curious to know if these premature failures were from just one line of there product or various lines. Can any of you specify which shingle you had that failed? 3-Tab, 30yr.,40yr, 50yr, &/or IR
It’s only if it’s organic should you have to worry
DON’T DO IT!
Stay away from CertainTeed. Bad company and bad product
I must say you have very interesting posts here.

Buyers of homes with CertainTeed shingles beware – I recently (2016) purchased a home with CertainTeed Organic shingles and the roof was flagged as prematurely aged in the home inspection report. I found the class action lawsuit website and purchased the home with the confidence that I would be able to recoup some if not all of my loss (the shingles were only 15 years old). Apparently I did not interpret the fine print properly and I will receive NO compensation. I have a lovely GAF (timberline) roof now and confidence it will not leak but I had to pay for a premature replacement with no assistance from the class action suit. In my situation CertainTeed did stand behind their product and I had to pay the price of their failure.
Your an idiot of course any asphalt shingle is going to last longer then organic doesn’t matter the brand certin teed is great if you get asphalt that’s why organic are not around the designed organic shingles so the would decompose in land fills but decomposed on roof that’s why they stoped making
FYI gaf timberline is garbage Home Depot shingle there’s a reason why certain teed does not sell there material at places like that

What do you mean by this?
CertainTeed sold me an inferior shingle and refused to honor their written warranty. Their own rep and 2 engineering firms said it was a product defect and they still wouldn’t warrant it. They only lasted 10 years. They were 30 year architectural shingles. They are supposed to be a great company but they don’t stand behind their product. Their claims department was unhelpful and uncaring. Communication to them was beyond poor and the local rep even though he originally said it was a manufactures defect was of no help. I used another product this time and will never use any of their products again.
WARNING!! CERTAINTEED LANDMARK DEFECTIVE SHINGLES WARNING!! Put this product on our new home 2010 and it needed to be replaced after 5 years!! Massive granular loss and patches of white fiberglass exposed from the shingle base. Worst part is CertainTeed not honoring the warranty. STY AWAY !!!.
Put on a CertainTeed Landmark Coll Roof in 2010. The granules came off after 1 year. The product was deemed defective and replaced. The same thing started to happen in 2013. Again, I sent in 2 shingles to the tech department . CertainTeed agreed to replace the roof. After many phone calls and communications to CertainTeed , we agreed on aa settlement amount to replace the roof again. On Sept 1, 2017, I received a letter stating that CertainTeed was withdrawing their aggreement and not replacing the roof. Really!! How can they withdraw after we had an agreement. CertainTeed said that they test some one else’s shingles???
Any help or suggestions to solve this situation is appreciated
We love this shingle not sure the color name, it is greyish but has some different colors bits mixed in. Looks really good and plan on it lasting a lifetime as warranty says it will. We had them hand nailed which is the best way to install roofing shingles I have heard.
I’m a residential roofer in Missouri and we use this shingle almost exclusively, lays nice and always find a good color Weathered Wood being our best seller, decent price too.
This is a good shingle but I cannot stress enough the importance of a GOOD ROOFER, really it matters more how its installed, nailed, vented etc than what shingle you put on. If you can can these for a good price pull the trigger you won’t be disappointed i swear.
Goof shingle, I like it, my wife shose the color and I put it on. Looks good and should last a while, I can tell they put some great technology into these.
It’s now 2012 10 years after my new home had the Landmark shingles from Certainteed installed on it and I am getting bids on a new roof. I am giving it a three nail ranking because I really can’t blame it all on Certainteed or the product. From what a few roofers have told be the “ridge vent” that was installed did not provide enough ventilation and the shingles prematurely failed. We have a hip roof and am now considering adding powered roof venting to help eliminate the problem in the future.
